Blackpool - 2018
The Blackpool De-Censorship Board

Working directly with the community bringing them together through outreach work, a workshop and an exhibition our aim is to produce a series of uncensored postcards that represent not only the hardship and struggles but also the joys experienced by the residents of Blackpool. This will culminate in an exhibition in a public space, chosen with the support of LEFTCOAST. We will target a specific area in Blackpool surrounding the sea front and pier.
 
The humble postcard once depicted good times. Sent by holidaymakers, they were a short and precise way to reach out and connect, arrange meetings and let friends and family know they cared. Whether a quick hello or a physicality of memory to take away, postcards were a mixture of public and private messages. Accompanying the multiple images on the front of the postcard were uplifting phrases overwritten by messages to loved ones[1]. Postcards also functioned as a means to raise money and awareness such as those used by Chichester theatre to fund their developments.


Erith Pier - 2017‘
Ghosts of the Thames’

Our aim is to enliven the pier through sound and sculpture, bringing the ghosts of the past to life, encouraging visitors to walk in the footsteps of those who have walked before. Erith’s long and ancient history is fertile ground for exploration. We intend to inspire and engage interaction through establishing a relationship between the listener, the past, and the sculptures. Here, nostalgia is a vehicle to bring communities together to share their memories, their stories and connect to each other and the surrounding landscape.

The magic of this project, ‘Ghosts of the Thames,’ lies in something other than mere information being transmitted—something more intangible yet more real—a sense of history, of belonging, of ‘ownership’ of the pier. Through the sounds and music inspired by the past, and the ghostly voices that rise from the river, the stories of Erith and The Thames unfold creating a sense of movement, flow and of change, the notion that something is happening, something important is taking place. The installation turns the pier into an on-going event and a place of potential, where the visitor, as he/she moves from one post to another, becomes part of the performance, carrying their version of what they heard from sculpture to sculpture and from person to person.

Slough 2017 ‘Signs for the Future.’


An interactive community project to engage, empower and celebrate.
 Our aim for ‘Signs for the Future,’ is to celebrate the city’s unique heritage, and encapsulate the magic, humour, strength and diversity of the community to weather the upcoming changes brought about by Crossrail and further developments to the city. Between the months of October to December 2017, ‘The City Art’s Doctors,’ will work with the many communities of Slough to develop creative, and playful stories, rap poems and humorous plays on words through music, drumming, storytelling, art and adventure and turn them into a permanent art installation of unique art-signage, ‘planted’ throughout the city.

Like modern day cave paintings, our project: ‘Signs for the Future,’ symbolises the shared tribal markings, language and spirit of the community. Each sign reveals something of importance, whether it be a direction, a position, or information. Abstract or representational, the signs will engage, connect and define space. Held within each are the many years of narrative, stories, geography, and culture. Easily recognizable, signs lead us safely through the landscape, alerting us to danger, or alternatively creating opportunities for new discoveries.
